Why was one of the bullies at the beginning carrying ski poles?

It was summertime and there was clearly no snow anywhere in sight, even on the distant mountaintops. And on a related note, why was the ski lift running in one of the scenes?

You are right this is a little odd. My take on it is that this was the writers attempt to emulate the original play in which there are duels/fencing (I think, I never actually saw Cyrano) and since Nelson is a ski/resort town, they decided to contemporize the idea and create a duel with ski poles and tennis rackets...? Not sure, just a theory.

Also, it is not uncommon for chair lifts to be open in the summer to visitors who wish to hike, mountain bike or sight-see, etc.

In the 1897 play Cyrano duels a man who insulted him. He stabbed and possibly killed him. The two drunks got off with a bit of a thrashing.

Mountains all around with snow. Lots of skiing.
