I can't understand why women are attracted to him. He is smug, disgusting, and not remotely physically attractive. An active alcoholic is not attractive, especially one in denial. Ugh. Yeah, he's intelligent, and that is the first thing I look for in a man, but that quality is overshadowed by his rudeness to everyone, especially Lewis.

The stories are good and I love the Oxford setting, so I'm plowing through them. Oddly, I love the character Endeavour in that series. I can't link the two in my mind. I can't figure out how Endeavour turned into this jerk.

Before anyone disagrees, I can't watch anything else about Morse since John Thaw died. I was so sad. My hubby and I watched every Inspector Morse. Especially good was Dead on Time which co-starred Joanna David. In the story we see what Lewis really thinks of his friend and supervisor. No spoiler intended, but I will only say that someone stepped outside the boundary lines for someone else and did this unselfishly. Very touching.

I love the Oxford setting too and just loved the first one we saw, The Wolvercote Tongue.

Yeah, he could be repulsive and arrogant - and had treated Lewis badly at times.
The last one was so touching when Lewis visited him in hospital.

I had read all of the Colin Dexter books and saw the article where he didn't want to write about Morse after his friend died. It seems the writer and Morse were best friends in real life.

It sounds like a lot of people like Endeavor. Will give it a try. Somehow Morse found his way into my heart. I recall he liked the M.E. Grayling, but she was dating a younger man. So Morse was unlucky in love too.

He should be dead so many times. I don't know how he survives at all...luck maybe.

1. Old fashioned and lacking social skills.

2. An intellectual and an educated, cultured man who feels superior and is a snob about it.

3. Not a happy man and often irritable.

4. Apart from his just about constant and nearly always unsuccessful attempts to impose himself on women with a view to getting his leg over and his prickly nature Morse is basically a decent man.
