Such a bitch. You're a fighter pilot, they train extremely hard, so why did he have a melt down?

Don't get hurt kid. I'm not your daddy, I'll beat you senseless.

Obviously he had a NEWBORN kid... could've been blown out of the sky if the Soviet fighters were clear to engage. He'd obviously been actually flying and logging tons of hours and likely his tactics/maneuverability put him in chair 1, but when faced with an ACTUAL (non-simulated) combat situation fighter v. fighter (non bombing/stealth-ops/ground) fighting he got spooked.

He could've also been highly stressed despite being good at the role, and that chance of death was the final straw considering his newborn.

It clearly showed him staring at his wife kid...

Makes sense, but being a fighter pilot, your mindset should always be 100% in any battle situation. Everything you do becomes muscle memory and mentally sound for battle. Usually it's the post war that service men develop PTSD.

PTSD doesn't wait until retirement. It always has been déclassé for men to admit to any 'shell shock' while on active duty. The mindset is to wait until you can't do the job anymore to mention problems if at all. The vast majority of people who suffer from any of the various levels of PTSD do not want it discovered period. About half of cases that are diagnosed are done so through involuntary 3rd party observation. Nowadays most people who mention having PTSD are REMFs who think it is an extra ribbon to brag about.

You are taking a dump and they call GQ do you pinch it off or finish your business?

He had to get out of the way so Maverick could be number 1. That way Goose could die and Pete could quit right before graduation. Makes perfect sense. ;)

He just lost it, man.

1) He had a newborn child at home and this was the first time since the birth that he was faced with what would happen to his kid if he got killed in action. It scared him to the point that he knew he had to immediately stop flying.

2) Obviously he had proven himself in combat prior to that, since he was #1, but that may have been the first time he had been in such imminent danger. An enemy fighter had missile lock on him and could have easily fired on him and killed him. Adding the new baby and stress of it got to him.

Who the heck was that? Was that Kelly McGillis’ character?

I have heard stories of elite helicopter pilots or soldiers(such as in the real Blackhawk Down) who bail once put in harm’s way.
