It is obvious he is a ghost. He was shot by a typical .45 caliber pistol from the old west. He was shot 6 times in the middle of his chest/his heart. Even today, with all our medical technology, it would be impossible to survive such a traumatic injury. His heart would have been destroyed, and likely his spine as well. Not to mention his lungs. Eastwood made a point of showing us the wounds and their placement. So the wounds alone is plenty of evidence to prove he is a ghost. Don't believe me, then just google .45 caliber wound. Be forwarned, the pictures are not for the faint of heart, especially the ones where the heads are blown half off. like I said, you do not survive six .45 caliber gunshot wounds in the middle of your chest.

Now add in the placement of symbolism and you cannot deny he is a ghost. You have the reading of biblical text referencing the 4 horseman of the apocalypse as he arrives. And you have clint eastwood stating that he was, in fact, a ghost.

If you don't believe he is a ghost and believe he somehow could have healed from those injuries, then you have to believe he is the wolverine from x-men as only wolverine could heal from injuries like those.

Pale Rider - Pale Horse.

The Pale Horse is one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. The pale Horse is named Death and brings with it hell.

That’s where I believe the name Pale Rider comes from. Thats the origin.

“I looked, and there before me was a pale horse. Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth”

I like Pale Rider a lot, but I don't like the term "Ghost" here. I can't really say what the Preacher was, but I think he was more an Angel sent to make things right for the miners, and especially the family. I like how the family is fractured, no bio father, Mom's ambivalent about her suitor but appreciates his help and attention, Preacher gets both Mom and daughter aroused in different ways, while Preacher plays it cool with everyone. Makes it much more involving than just the good guys versus the bad guys. I really do like this film, although it was in heavy enough rotation where I got a little too familiar with it.

I don't believe he was a ghost, or in any way supernatural, in this film. He's a badass, and is in command of everything around him from start to finish-- a weakness in the film, in my opinion-- but he seems human. I know the end calls that into question, when Marshal Stockburn seems to recognize someone else in his eyes, but that wasn't enough proof for me, if you will. I won't say it's out of the question, and if anything, if he *is* meant to be a ghost I think the film did a poor job of selling it.
