Mark Patton has said in interviews that if he were older/wiser/had more time to prepare or if they had actually told him what they really going for, he would have played the character much more emo or goth.
That would've been interesting for the time.
His screams were a little over the top.

The first one was such a hit, and New Line had been quite small time up until then, they just decided they wanted to make another cheap one in a hurry. They were even in two minds about getting Robert Englund back because they thought he cost too much.
I don't think they were going for anything other than a cheap movie with big profit.
