Why didn't this movie receive more Oscar nominations?

This is a fantastic movie and was highly overlooked at the Oscars. Why wasn't Cher nominated for Best Actress for this movie? And even Eric Stoltz? It doesn't really make any sense. Was it because of the director not being happy with the soundtrack and that may have prevented the Oscars from giving the movie more nominations?

It was never rated as "excellent", but as a good film. It's popularity rested on Cher. Cher may not have been nominated because her performance was not consistent. The fact she gave the director such a hard time ,when she was a beginner, could not have helped

The virtues of MASK, overcome it's shortcomings. The main flaw, being the production design. This film was supposed to be set in the 70's, yet no effort seems to have been made, to make it look authentic. It had a mid 80's feel and style about it, which is when it was made. Cher, while good, is not extraordinary and I agree it's popularity rested on her presence. Wow! Look at Cher, she is acting now as well as being a pop star. Her singing, is nothing exceptional either.

Bogdanovich, had his place in the sun in the early 70's and his popularity waned, soon after. He looks like a pompous, self-entitled, git and perhaps shot himself in the foot, due to his own arrogance and self-importance. Perhaps he and Cher, deserved each other. MASK, is more Stoltz's movie. The true, courageous tale and his moving performance, is what elevates the film, rather than any other special, exceptional quality, that it doesn't really possess.

Backlash against Cher affected his chances. Bogdanovich had a fight with the studio, and Cher sided with the studio. That caused several of Bogdanovich allies to start a whisper campaign against Cher getting an Oscar nod. Unfortunate it spilled over to Stoltz's chances as well.

I'm surprised it was so overlooked too.
I've watched this many times, including when it first aired in 1985. Maybe because I was born in 1975 & saw this at age 10, but I never got the impression it was an '80s film.
It felt like late '70s to me!

Plus, I thought Cher did quite well. What exactly were people expecting from her, anyway??

Her crying scenes were hit or miss, yes.

But who didn't begin to weep at her excellently-delivered "Now, you can go anywhere you want to Baby." Her voice sounded like it truly *broke* on that line, good acting.

Its just a shame that all the focus was on Cher! How about Eric Stoltz's excellent acting??? Or even Laura Dern's or Sam Elliott's good supporting acting?

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

Cher not being nominated for her performance in this film is one of the all time Oscar oversights imo

Possibly the release date.

Because the Academy Awards are a lot of meaningless twaddle?

That answer sure works well for me.

"I don't deduce, I observe."

I heard Cher’s award for Moonstruck, a few years later, was a makeup for her not getting nominated for Mask

She did give a good performance . She was also really pretty - but that may have been the problem. Her glamorous looks were inconsistent with her character’s drug use, promiscuity, and general sleaze
