To appreciate what a huge disappointment this film was, you probably have to be sufficiently old to have seen The Road Warrior on its initial release. I understand what Miller was trying to do. He didn't intend to replicate the high octane energy of the previous film and seemed more interested in exploring what sort of civilizations emerged in the wasteland. That could have been very interesting. Tina Turner's little methane factory and the kiddie poo revolution just didn't cut it. The villains were pretty dull too. The guy with the big ponytail and the midget with his big fat bodyguard couldn't hold a candle to even the Nightrider.

Miller really had a tough time after his co-producer Byron Kennedy died before this movie was made. Kennedy had been the driving force of the success of Mad Max, he'd been to Hollywood and understood a movie's narrative, story arc, etc. After Kennedy died all Miller did was mash together Kennedy's old ideas from Road Warrior, which is why this movie is such an awful mess. Even Mel Gibson said "this movie's a piece of shit, don't tell anybody".

While it's not as good as MM2 it certainly isn't awful by any means. I really like it aanyway. It's better than the first one which I find pretty boring to be honest. I go back to MM2 and MM3 regularly but I always skip the first one.

Nightrider? A punk who lost it when confronted with the bronze. You can tell Toecutter I said so. I'll take care of him too.
