Flawed but fun

This was an amusing 90 minutes with a good cast, some nice gags and Colleen Camp’s insane cleavage… but it’s not a great whodunnit.

Good examples of the genre string you along with a clear thread, throw in surprises, and then astound you with a final flourish when all is revealed and you slap your forehead. This was kinda messy with too many elements and then, probably because they filmed 3 endings, the final unmasking felt arbitrary - like the writer just pulled it out his ass last minute - it didn’t feel like something solid had been constructed without us knowing the whole time.

It needed some Hitchcockian suspense. I never felt like I cared particularly for any of the characters, nor what the outcome would be. They leant into the goofy comedy and didn’t seem to care about gripping the audience with relatable characters and a well constructed plot.

Weirdly, a good example would be Scream. Obviously it’s a horror but it’s also a great comedy, you're constantly guessing who the killer is, and the final reveal feels like a rug has been pulled from under your feet. Plus, when you rewatch the film you see all sorts of clues to the hidden truth, and everything holds together in airtight fashion.

I’m glad Clue has a cult following but I couldn't help thinking it could have been much more if they’d tackled it as a whodunnit suspense thriller and then layered the comedy on top.

Good take

Can't disagree. The only reason I rewatch this film is for Yvette's huge tits. Take her out and I wouldn't bother revisiting this film (not to say that it's a bad film). Such is the power of breasts!

Agreed 100%. Depending on my mood when watching I either don’t care and love it or kind of care but still like it a lot.

The multiple endings really hurts it, but it improves rewatches.

Same here. I don’t think it’s a hood or interesting or clever movie but for whatever reason I do watch it when it comes on. Lesley Ann warren and Colleen camp help my interest and I like the creepy mansion - the mystery element is great at the beginning but then it falls apart quickly as I don’t care about the characters or who was the actual killer

I agree. Out of curiosity I wondered if reviewers back in the day picked up on the same problem, and it seems Ebert did:

The lights go on and off, murder weapons appear and disappear, dead bodies accumulate. Since none of these events have the slightest significance, the filmmakers have attempted to make "Clue" into a screwball comedy, with lots of throwaway gags and one liners. Some of these moments of comedy are funny. Most are not. The cast looks promising. . . but the screenplay is so very, very thin that they spend most of their time looking frustrated, as if they'd just been cut off right before they were about to say something interesting.

Life sometimes contains wonderful ironies. When "Jagged Edge" was released a few months ago, everything hinged on the identity of the killer. The movie showed the killer being unmasked - literally showed his face on the screen - and yet, because of the camera angle, some viewers were still confused. They walked out of the theater arguing about who did it. Now we have a movie that makes it absolutely clear that several different people were guilty, and I walked out of the theater arguing about where to have lunch.

Ebert was a fantastic reviewer. Just imagine if he just started out a decade ago - his YouTube channel would have millions of subs! RIP

I disagree. I like this film a lot. It will always be a favorite of mine.

Agree with most of that . My biggest fault with Clue is the mystery and ‘whodunit’ element is extremely lacking. Towards the mess when they start to piece together the various endings I am just shaking my head .. it’s not interesting or entertaining in the least

I loved the first 15 minutes though - the introduction of the huge creepy mansion and mysterious characters. Lesley Ann warren and the Colleen camp were very nice to look at but everything else was just not that good

I’m not sure how or if it’s possible to make a good gripping movie based on the board game . If they attempt it again please leave the bad humor out of it
