Solid pickings, but I would go with Eva Green or Emily Blunt as Yvette and Riki Lindhome as Mrs. White.

reply

I think you need someone *ahem* well-endowed for Yvette...

As for Mrs White, I'm admittedly unfamiliar with Riki Lindhome. I just could imagine Kate McKinnon eating up that whole "I hated her SO much, it was like flames...on the side of the face" speech.

reply

Have you seen Eva Green? She's definitely well-equipped for the role, plus she's actually French.

As for McKinnon, I can appreciate goofy mannerisms as much as the next viewer, but I have yet to see her in a role where she comes off as a halfway convincing human being rather than a random assortment of affectations. I can also see Aubrey Plaza nailing the role.

reply

Aubrey Plaza is great. I've seen her name suggested elsewhere, but I'd say she was a tad too young at this stage of her career to hypothetically play Mrs White.

Also, remember, Yvette wasn't actually French. Plus, Eva Green gives off the type of intelligence and wit I'd associate more with Miss Scarlet than Yvette who comes across as a bit of a dumb blonde, even after her identity has been revealed.

reply

Plaza is barely six months younger than McKinnon, but I agree she comes off as younger. I think Lindhome or her frequent collaborator, Natasha Leggero, or maybe even Rachel Weisz for a greater air of worldliness. Maybe cast Janeane Garofalo for the dry cynicism.

I'll give you that Eva Green radiates intelligence, but I would argue that usually works in one's favor when playing an outwardly ditsy character. That being said, Rachel Bloom is a good fit to nail those key character aspects you mentioned.

reply

I agree with everything you've said apart from this point: 'but I would argue that usually works in one's favor when playing an outwardly ditsy character'

I'm rarely convinced when ever I see a highly intelligent actor play a particularly stupid character. Yes, you want someone with half a brain for any part, otherwise you end up with poor, incapable actors, but you also want people who can convincingly exude the traits they've been assigned.

Now, Yvette is admittedly not as dumb as she first appears (i.e. she's in cahoots with Miss Scarlet and is in fact part of the blackmail and murder plan), so to that degree I guess Eva Green could work in the role, since she'd be playing a character who is only affecting stupidity, but if I was casting a genuine 'dumb blonde' Green would not be my first choice.

Frankly if it is a remake it shouldn't have Wadsworth since it should create a new character to replace him. Also Mrs. Peacock should be a young woman in the remake. I don't know who I would want to cast in the roles. Also a remake shouldn't be a comedy. It should be a thriller to be different from the original.

reply

Well, I don't expect anyone to actually make this hypothetical remake.

I agree that a Clue reboot should be nothing like the 1985 film. It should probably be, as you say, a thriller, and the characterisations should be different to the ones presented in the earlier film (Mrs White should probably be a cook/maid like she is in the game, and Mr Green could either be a clergyman, as he is in the UK version of the game, or a con-artist as he is in the US version).

Bear in mind that my casting is based on the idea of a hypothetical 2019 using the exact same script as the 1985 film, and thus the same characterisations.

reply

I see. I like Cahterine O Hara as Mrs. Peacock. Come to think of it, she hasn't been in a ton of movies the last few years. The last one I remember her in was Where the Wild Things are.

reply

She's great.

She often appears in Christopher Guest films, but I'm not sure if he has anything in the pipeline.

But I do believe that Martin Scorsese has a SCTV reunion documentary lined-up for Netflix, and she's meant to be part of that. I wonder what's happened to it. I'm really looking forward to it, especially since I believe it will feature the otherwise reclusive Rick Moranis.

reply

I think O'Hara is inspired casting for Mrs. Peacock. She's got the SCTV experience in precise comedic timing.

reply

Not bad actually. Though I think I'd replace Catherine O'Hara and Kate McKinnon with Megan Mullally and Kristen Wiig.

reply

They'd work too.

reply

Chris Hemsworth

Late to the party, but here we go!

Wadsworth: Samuel Barnett
Mr Green: Josh Gad/Jake Johnson
Colonel Mustard: Kelsey Grammer
Professor Plum: Robert Downey jr - I can honestly see him playing Wadsworth and Mr. Green as well. Tough choice.
Mrs Peacock: Catherine O'Hara - Great choice! I could see Michelle Pfeiffer too, because she looks alot like Eileen.
Miss Scarlet: Emma Stone or Jennifer Lawrence (Lawrence would be amazing as White too)
Mrs White: Amy Schumer
Mr Boddy: Jon Hamm
Yvette: Rose Byrne
The Cook: Melissa McCarthy
The Cop: Ernie Hudson
The Motorist: Ty Burrell
The Singing Telegram Girl: Anna Kendrick is a great choice too. My runner up would be Alison Brie.
The Chief: Don Johnson
