Mistake to kill off David?

I realize this made for a major storyline for ST VI with Kirk's hatred of Klingons. But David was an interesting character IMO. Savek was a more dispensable character.

They at least should have made Savek pregnant with David's child.

They weren't thinking about Star Trek VI when they decided to kill off David Marcus. They did it to give Shatner a chance to chew up the scenery with his falling back on the chair and saying "You Klingon bastards. You killed my boy."

At the time in question I thought it was a mistake, but looking back it made Kirk's anti-Klingon feelings in The Undiscovered Country more believable. The producers gave Star Trek lemons, so Star Trek made lemonade!!!

Excellent point. I hated that Kirk essentially traded his son's life for Spock's, but David's death sure gave Kirk a reason to hate the Klingons to his core.

I think anybody who wasn't a cast member of the TV series was fair game in terms of what could happen to their character.
