Phone Ringing Forever To Open The Movie

That was so F'n annoying and distraction. Terrible idea.

it's driving me *beep* nuts

like the point of it is pretty obvious from the start

but i have ocd and it's making my brain hell to the point where i can't even pay attention to what's actually on screen

nevermind that it's a *beep* awful grating sound in the first place

It is something that will haunt him forever, hence it is ringing for what seems like forever. Maybe the opium made him relive that.

I've always hated when they put phones ringing and ringing in movies and this is the worst example. Answer it already!!

I saw this movie on fox back in the late 90s at 2am and as long as I live I'll never forget the old lady next door to my apartment screaming SOMEBODY ANSWER THAT DANN PHONE!!!

I still laugh about it today

reply

Have to admit it went on forever and i pressed mute until it finished

reply

How did you know that it had finished then? 🤔

reply

Aha

Whatever the artistic choice behind this was, it's funny to think about people going crazy because of a film's ringing phone. That story about the old lady another poster mentioned is amusing.

You want something corny? You got it!

I personally HATE the telephone ringing sequence, it goes on for what feels like FOREVER and just gets plain annoying. It actually rings for 3 mins and 10 seconds ... We all get the point after like the first 30 seconds of it ringing, any longer and it only serves to irritate the viewer.

any longer and it only serves to irritate the viewer.

This is the gist of the whole movie. Make 30 second scenes into painfully boring hours.

reply

distracting not distraction. It rang 24 times.

I got the point of it and still disliked it. I have personally always hated phones, and to hear one for so long annoyed me to the point of almost losing it. And I don't know if this is funny or not but right after the phone in the movie finally stopped, my house phone here rang, and then about 5 minutes later it rang again.... god I hate phones!

reply

24 times to be exact. It's the 20th ring that probably drives most people up the wall: DeNiro picks up the receiver and we think, "Finally! No more ringing!," only for there to be four more as he phones the police. Brilliant!

reply

I forgot about that. It's been just AGES since I've watched this (top-notch!) film. Leone's use of sound was always stellar.
