There was originally much more to his character. He had some high tech gadgets. Joseph Zito talks about it in the audio commentary. He went even further in a really old interview that was on a now defunct horror fan website. According to Zito, the reason why it fell to the wayside was a combination of crappy props and the idea, while cool, doesn't really work in a F13 movie.
