Remake Ideas: A Hybrid of 2001, 2010, Kubrick, and Clarke

I oppose the idea of remakes in general, and for 2001 film in particular, however, if 2001 and/or 2010 were ever remade there is one approach that might a least be interesting. I'd call it a 2001/2010 hybrid, taking parts from both books while at the same time sufficiently different from either of the two movies:

Some suggestions:

1) re-title the movie "The Sentinel", which was the title of an early Clarke short story which was the basis for the Kubrick/Clarke 2001 screenplay.

2) once the title is changed, the film can be set at an indeterminate point in the future

3) incorporate material from both the books 2001, 2010 & maybe 2061 by Clarke...but only materials from the books, not the movies.

4) skip over the "Dawn of Man" and "Clavius" sequences, which allows us to:

5) jump right into the Jupiter mission from the point in Clarke's 2001 novelization

6) make the ultimate target planet Saturn, just as in Clarke's novel, with the audience learning of the monolith and the ultimate mission the same time Bowman does

7) make the monoliths translucent rectangles, just as in Clarke's novel

8) make the Leonov rescue misson a multi-national expedition (American, Russian, Chinese, British, French, Brazilian, Japanese, and Indian crew-members). In fact, since it's no longer a Russian ship, might as well change the name while we're at it.

9) use the spare, other-wordly music of John Cage (especially Cage's music for prepared piano & vocal music), with absolutely no music re-use of music from Kubrick's or Hyams' films

10) incorporate the newest technology and newest ideas that NASA and other space agencies may have today.

11) don't have an parts of the film take place on earth, keep it in space please

12) the Jupiter and Saturn flybys should be a major part of the film visually, and should be used to give the film a chance to "breathe". Clarke's description of the sun hitting the rings of Saturn is one of the most poetic parts of his book 2001, and was never seen in either of the films, obviously, since they never made it to Saturn.

...and good luck with that [laugh]

If they did a third film they'd probably keep it a sequel as 2001 is such an iconic movie it be like doing a remake of Blade Runner or Star Wars instead of 2049 or Episode VII.

Obviously it would be now set in an alternate universe future like Blade Runner 2049 was .. most likely '2061: A Space Odyssey' (and obviously featuring Keir Dullea - as he is now and CG/DF deaged). Ridley or Denis directs

But as with BR2049 (and Dr Sleep) it probably wouldnt generate much box office aside the film buffs going crazy over it

However if it was to be a remake then it wouldn't be too beholden to a 50+ year old movie kids wouldnt be too keen to catch up on, and they'd get to reimagine all the iconic stuff (Hal, Discovery, Monolith, Dawn of Man, Stargate, Starchild etc). your ideas are pretty sound in incorporating elements of the various novels and setting it at some point in the near future and calling it 'The Sentinal' . but a problem would be not having the iconic '2001' in the title (or 2000 and something so ppl know its related). Maybe 'A Space Odyssey' would work as it be vaguely reminiscent of the original film

7a) Include the story of the Chinese mission and it's poetic end from the 2010 book.

9) So not include John Cage music where he brutally mistreats a piano.

13) Make it a mini-series and watch the usual complaints flood in - too slow - too many gratuitous Chinese - this is nothing like Grey's Anatomy (a complaint heard about Defying Gravity from some of the stupidier TV critics).
