Obviously they where unaware about What was to happen but What where the people in this movie expecting the big giveaway to actually be?, some kind of code on the screen that matches to a code on the masks for a money prize?

A good question. I wonder too, but I think even the creators of this movie don’t really even know it themselves. (Maybe check out the commentary track?) They just passed the buck onto us so we would scratch our heads.
