This movie is .. FUN!

I know, people have said bad things about this movie; the plot is ridiculous, everything is utterly unrealistic, some of the acting performances are awkward and embarrassing, there aren't that many hilarious jokes, the 'fish on land' setting is overdone, the 'trying to be in two completely separate places at once' thing where two parties (or whatever) just HAPPEN to happen in the same building - etc. etc.. we have seen it all so many times.

I can't argue against anyone who says that this movie is bad, lousy or awful.

But at the same time, I don't think anyone can argue with wisdom against the statement that this movie is FUN!

That's just what it is. There's not much content, as a movie, as a comedy, as a storyline, as performances (except Dan's) - but there's just something magically fun about this piece of entertainment. It's like innocent fun for those who actually enjoy ESCAPISM (instead of torture, which seems to be the trend nowadays).

I'll take a goofy, unrealistic escapism any time over 'realistic', depressing, gloomy nightmare.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. The whole goofiness of it makes me laugh. It's one of those films that are so ridiculous, you just can't seem to stop watching it. I will take the Doctor over some of the Oscar nominated films anyday.
Plus the dance scene, with James Brown, is epic.

I re-watched Doctor Detroit over the weekend for the first time since it came out. I didn't enjoy it very much. I can only imagine how much I would have hated it if I wasn't drunk.

I'm not a fan, but my cousin loves this. It's silly and definitely a product of its time. I saw it in my 30's. I would have enjoyed it more if I saw it when I was younger as my cousin did.
