I was lucky to watch this first run in Nov 1983 while working the base switchboard at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, which is part of the plot of the movie. I had only been in the Air Force 3 months, they shipped me to Whiteman immediately after basic training without going to tech school.

I saw it on ABC when it was first broadcast. I remember Ted Koppel had a special episode of Nightline with Carl Sagan when it played.

Yeah I was like six and at home probably watching by myself. I think I was freaked out.
