Why didn't they just pour fuel down into the well then light the floor on fire. It would not take that long for the fuel to burn up and it would have killed the snakes.

That would certainly have been the logical thing to do. It would have scattered them for sure. Then, send several guys down with rakes and shovels.

Maybe they didn't have sufficient liquid fuel with them.

That would have also burned the contents of the chamber if tgey did it indiscriminately

As others have said... + They did not want to risk a plume of smoke on top of all the previous activity to tip off the Nazis.
