Why do people like this movie!

I am a 70's and 80's horror film nut and was really looking forward to seeing this movie so I bought it to add to my collection. Boy, what a mistake!

The acting was horrible, the plot was barely there, and the killing scenes were sickening!

The only thing I did like was seeing Jason Alexander(Hey George!!!) pre-Seinfeld days- I guess we all have to pay the bills somehow.

3 out of a 10.

I agree with the OP.
I had heard this film was a 'great slasher not to be missed'. I couldn't even get through the whole film. I fast-forwarded to the end, which was HORRIBLE.

It was acted badly, the teenagers looked 35, and the killing scenes that I did see were indeed sickening.

You shouldn't see a film with effects by Tom Savini if you don't like gory movies *shrug*.

This is absolutely one of my early 80's favorites. A great cast who ARE good actors, great effects by Savini, a terrific score, a memorable and menacing villain, and some actual character development.

I thought Tom Savini's effects in "Friday the 13th" were superb.

While I am not a fan of gore for gore's sake as a rule, this film's script was what made it awful.

I totally disagree. I thought the script was better than average for a slasher movie, there was actual character development here, and the acting was solid. Tom Savini's effects work here ranks up with his best imo. The look of Cropsy, the raft sequence etc.

The acting was horrible? I don't agree with that, this is a solid slasher with 1 very memorable scene (the raft killings) - nothing more, nothing less, but the acting is definitely above average for this kind of film.

I love it due to Rick Wakeman's Synth Score!

Pay the bills? He was a young actor trying to get whatever role he could. I'm sure he was thrilled to have such a prominent role in a movie.

I've watched dozens, maybe hundreds, of these types of movies and The Burning is close to the top of the heap. The plot, dialogue, camerawork, acting, music, effects ... Just about everything was far better than most films in this genre. Now that of course is just an opinion but what I really don't understand is: aren't horror movie kill scenes SUPPOSED to be sickening?! That just means Savini did a good job. Would you prefer he had done a BAD job? I don't get it.
