William Hurt vs. Ned Racine

William Hurt is easily one of the smartest actors of recent decades. But, Ned Racine is dumb as a lamp post. It's tough for me to reconcile the two.

Hurt does a great job acting, here as in a large majority of his roles. But, it's tough to buy how easily taken in Ned is.

I don't know if I believe Ned is as dumb as he is lazy and apathetic. Nothing or no one in his life has inspired him out of his boredom or easy complacency... .
Until Maddie.
That's why he ignores every instinct he has about her. All along the way he's suspicious of her motives but refuses to back off.
