Axe murder is genius (spoilers)

Marcie's death scene still to this day I find shockingly effective, largely because of the way it's edited:

You see the silhouette of the axe rise up behind her. She turns around, and we see it physically raised, and then come towards the camera. The camera zooms in on Marcie as she screams. The axe hits the lamp overhead, making the light flutter. There's then that iconic lingering shot of the lamp shaking, and it almost tricks you into thinking that's all you're going to see. You intuitively expect it to cut to the next scene—but it doesn't.

There's then the loud, jolt-inducing musical cue as she collapses agains the shower stall, her eye fluttering, with an axe split through half her face.

It's honestly is one of the most grotesque axe murder scenes I've seen on film, and one of the most effective. I can only imagine the reaction it got from audiences in 1980. Even today, you don't really expect to see it like you do. It's a fantastic moment in a great film.

Her death scene is definitely my favorite in this movie and may well be my favorite in the saga.

I always find the scene where she talks about her recurring dream paticularly chilling considering what happens to her later.

it's one of the more horrific and memorable deaths i agree.
there was something really gnarly about it.

I think it would have been more effective and shocking without the music, the shadow on the wall, and the fact that she cries right before. Just imagine if the axe had came out of nowhere and quickly hit her before she even knew it. That would have been so much scarier.

Agreed! I love this scene but my only issue is the way she just sort of stands there and closes her eyes and waits for it (ahhhh!). It doesn't really look like a "freeze" reaction to me even though I know people do that. I do love the way the scene was shot though.

It took me three hours to figure out that FU was Felix Ungar.

It was very shocking when the movie was brand new.
