And he just turns away. That scene is absolutely chilling. When I watched it in Redux it confirmed a pivotal moment when all hope is lost, all hell is upon them and everyone they meet (like that soldier) are just ghosts in the madness.

shareYeah, the “Ain’t you?” came from the machine gunner. There was an earlier scene where Martin Sheen asks him and he responds with “what the f do you think I’m doing?” Then he turns around, sees Martin Sheen, and gives a more polite answer.
I think the machine gunner mistook Martin Sheen for the commanding officer because Martin Sheen was white.
