Damn this is Weird

Please tell me someone else has seen this! The sound effects are very strange in a trippy way in this low budget oddity full of weird scenes. One part not to miss is when the grandma from Airplane’s RV gets attacked by the dreaded possessed boulders. It’s like the boulders decided to kill grandma and grandpa the slow way by attacking their air conditioning unit, robbing them of cool air.

Any fans of 70’s horror obscurity please check this one out and report back.

Thanks! I will watch that later and come back!

Well, that was a strange little film. I see what you mean about those sound effects. I thought the performances were pretty good, and the scene with the boulders was quite well done for the time and obvious low budget. Interesting that the whole 'restless Indian spirits' thing predated The Amityville Horror by a few years.

Surprised I hadn't seen it before, but I think I'd remember.

Glad to have fellow obscure horror fan around. If you have any recommendations for me I would be grateful. 👍

Ditto! And will do 👍

Have you seen Tormented? (1960) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054393/ I only caught it a little while ago.

Not a bad little ghost story. A guy is haunted by the ghost of an ex-lover, who he let fall to her death from a lighthouse. It gets a little cheesy in places, but there are some pretty atmospheric scenes (including one particularly effective one towards the end, which I won't spoil in case you haven't seen it). It also has an early performance from Joe Turkel, as a sleazy blackmailer.

It's in the public domain (there's a link to the movie on its Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tormented_(1960_film)).

reply

No I haven’t seen it and I’ll hunt it down for tomorrow. Thanks.

I've got 'Tormented' on DVD. It gets really creepy especially the record player. I will give that another viewing. When I can find it my untidy pile of old DVDs.

reply

👍 I really like the scene towards the end when the flowers wilt in the church as the ghost makes her way up the aisle.

reply

I had forgotten about that bit you hid under the spoiler bar. I'm definitely going to find my DVD of this to watch again.

Thanks for the link to this film. I like these weird obscure horrors and will come back on here with a few comments after I've watched it.

I've just now watched this on You Tube. I notice that someone has put grandma and the boulder sequence to be watched on it's own on there. It is a weird piece plus the rest of the movie. Native American ghost stuff is an avenue that perhaps should be pursued more.

I have 'The Shadow of Chikara' on DVD which tells of a native spirit which protects the sacred mountains from intruders. This was also made in 1977 and has a weird vibe. On my list of films to be watched is 'The Ghost Dance' (1982). This one is about a medicine man being possessed by a long lost warrior that turns the medicine man into a killer. Good film poster art to that one with a man with staring psycho eyes and wielding a knife.

I haven’t heard of either of those two so I’ll be adding them to my list also. Now that several of these Native American supernatural horror films have been mentioned, all from the late 70’s to the early 80’s, I thought of a couple of more to add to the list. One is Night Wing (1977) starring David Warner about Vampire Bats killing people on a reservation. I used to watch it often as a kid and is pretty cool if you can get past the bad bat effects. Another is The Prophecy (1979) about a raging deformed Bear who is the product of pollutants unleashed by a corporation on Native American lands.

It seems like this was indeed a horror subgenere during this time. Thank you for your recommendations and I’m glad to see more low budget horror fans around. 😋

Thank you for the recommendation for 'Prophecy' which I've just now watched on You Tube. That was a great scene where the Native American was threatened by the chain saw. And it's the first time I have come across the mention of katahdin and chupacabra legendary creatures. I don't think You Tube have got 'Nightwing' at the moment so I'll check out the reviews of it on there and hopefully get to see it in the future. BTW You Tube have got that 'Shadow of Chikara' I mentioned under the alternative title of 'Curse of the Demon Mountain.'

reply

i don't have much to add except to say i thought it was wonderfully bizarre and i'm glad i watched it.

reply

They don't seem to make them like that anymore!

reply

there is definitely a trippy & somewhat incompetent feel to this that seems very specific to its era.

reminds me a bit of stephanie rothman's 'the velvet vampire,' if you've ever seen that. not that they're anything alike plotwise...but it has that same kind of spacey, occasionally dull but also lovably dreamlike vibe that i really like.

reply

I haven't, but I'll look out for it 👍

it's on tubitv if you ever wanna check it out.

it's got lance rocke from beyond the valley of the dolls in it!
