would you like to see a remake of this?

Or would that be heresy?

reply

Remakes are heresy by definition. Not that a plot can't be reused; the plots of Shane and Casablanca have been used dozens of times, set in different times and places and sometimes even changing the gender of some of the characters, and some of those films are pretty good, but so far nobody has had the gall to call one of them Shane or Casablanca.

For me it's the style of the Duelists that make it memorable, and that style is defined by the director. So, while someone could produce their own take on Conrad's story, I don't see how this film could be remade or why one would want to.

Right on! Perfect answer, sparker.

And there's always The Prestige, if one really want to see a remake or reshaping of The Duellists.

Yes ! The hero could be the Rock and the villain Vin Diesel.

reply

We could CGI the swords and have them duel on a green screen background. Also, we could recast the two officers as desexualised minority women and they could crack jokes and shitty one liners the whole fucking time. Also, while we watch it we could fuck a cheese grater.

reply

"And that style is defined by the director".

Yeah - and in the case of The Duellists, that director would be Stanley Kubrick.

Conrad's work apparently yields to screen adaptation very well. Why would anyone want to have this very film remade is beyound me.

Many people are too much hostile to the Remakes.
But I'm not.

I do hate in some cases, when it seems to be the evidence of the lack of the creativity.
I think The idiocy of the writers of these days is gone too far.

In my point of view, Hollywood in these days are just about the cheesy Superheroes came out of comic book.
(Of course that's nothing to do with Nolan's new Batman saga.)
Because there are not much other sources.

And when the original actors' performance is so damn perfect... then it comes to a difficulty.

But I think it BETTER to remake good old things and then BLAME it.
rather than just doing nothing.
that's just LAZINESS.
maybe they could provide some new infos about the story details, charactors' background story, the reasons of the charactors' behaviour.

When It comes to Sci Fi Things, it is good update the cg things.
doesn't have to be exactly a remake but partialy updated new edition whatever.

Just like new Star Wars 4~6.

I'd like to see Terminator 1 or Robocop 1~2 with some developed CG.

Or recent Blade runner.
They say the dialog about the numbers of the Replicant was wrong in the old edition.
So they re-recorded the sound.

And the fight choreography could be improved.
I'm not a swordmaster, but this the Duellists' swordplay seemed to me quite realstic and fancy.
But maybe it could be little bit more better, thanks for recent research of this area.

about this very picture.
Ridley Scott is my favourite director.
so no hard feelings about him.

But I'm not happy with these two American actors.
I think Harvey was just good in Scorsese's pictures and some more else.
not Napoleonic epic ones.

Keith was good in "Criminals Minds".
as German-American serial killer "Frank Breitkopf".

but In this film they both acted like too damn modern Americans.

And sorry for being too avid UK lover, but I think there's a plenty of much more better epic actors in Britain.
I don't even need to tell you who's the right man for those roles.
I'm not Brit, Irish, N. American, S. African, Aussie, New Zealander or else.
Sorry No Offence at all.

And, I think this picture isn't that well-known in spite of the actual value.
the Remake... So Why Not?

Then perhaps a remake should be a French production with French actors for those two characters. I think Vincent Cassel or Jean Reno would be a great Ferraud

reply

Too old. Maybe twenty years ago, Cassel's in his 40s and Reno his 60s and as Napoleon's Hussar General
Antoine LaSalle famously said: "Any hussar who isn't dead by the age of thirty is a blackguard."

reply

combatmaster, I couldn't disagree with you more. Why should you touch up old films, with your theory they should give the Mona Lisa some shades and a can of coke using photoshop and make her more up to date.

LEAVE FILMS AS THEY ARE!!!

Not doing a remake is not lazy in the slightest, why not instead of remaking a perfectly good film make something else all together, it's lazy to not look beyond making a remake which in most cases is completely unnecessary and are made because the film already has some kind of following and reputation (usually very good) meaning they can actually be lazy and rely on that to help sell the film.

Ridley Scott is a very different director to the one who made Alien and Blade Runner, just because he feels like changes should be made now does not mean he is right, same goes with George Lucas and Speilberg, all 3 in my opinion pale in comparison to their younger selves in terms of ability, and for that reason they should not be allowed to change their previous works.

I'd rather watch this movie over and over again rather than a remake. What's the point? Each time I see this I'm totally blown away all over again. It's a masterpiece.

This!

reply

It's the photography and lighting in this film that makes it so good, not the plot. A different director would photograph it differently, so much of what is best about it could not be built on.

reply

It wouldn't be a "heresy" since it's not a religious matter. It would be simply pointless - no point whatsoever in remaking a perfectly good film.

We'll buy some drugs and watch a band

reply

good Lord, NO!

An opinion is not offensive just because you do not agree with it.

reply

I thought the film stood the test of time very well.
The visuals are still crisp and the acting is fine.

But a re-adaptation of the story (maybe stick closer to the facts) could work.
The film was great but I just didn't really feel the time passing within the film's world.
So if they could take the story, make it a bit longer (140 minutes~) and develop both duellists, then I'd say it would be a film worth watching.
