What if the apartment has 3 bedrooms? Still a "no hanky-panky" rule (the girls come up with it) but Jack and one of the girls secretly starts a relationship? Or he starts one with both of them secretly and has to juggle them?
Not sure how long it can work and be played out, but it's an idea.
How would that differ from other sitcoms? You're forgetting that co-ed cohabitation was a big deal in the late 1970's. It's not now.
And it would be impossible to juggle roommates including in the era of social media. Cell phones, social media did not exist late 1970's.

Jack tells Janet not to post on social media, so Chrisy doesn't see. He also tells the same to Chrissy about Janet.
And it's not about cohabitation. It's the girls agreed neither would go for Jack.
Or they could have it as a threesome. With Larry always trying to get in on the action and being rejected.
