Her performance as Margaret White was incredible. RIP

Fun fact: when she read the script for the film, she thought it was a comedy and played her entire role comedically. It wasn't until they were done shooting when she realized it was a horror.

Nancy Allen said something similar, she said while they were filming she thought of her character Chris and John Travolta's character as totally over the top clowns being goofy and silly for the sake of comic relief. Then the first time she saw the finished movie, she was surprised at how evil they were.

EDIT: Also, apparently Piper Laurie thinking Carrie was a comedy had a lot to do with De Palma's previous movie Phantom of the Paradise, a modern re-telling of Phantom of the Opera which was chock full of humor and comedy.

I'm amazed how so many people could think this was a comedy. When DePalma was on set, wasn't he saying things that would make them think otherwise?

I haven't seen Carrie in many, many years. I bought it on 4K last year intending to watch it during Halloween month, but I didn't get around to it and let it sit for a year. I finally peeled off the cellophane and watched it over the weekend, two days ago. I just so happened to watch it on Oct 14. The following morning I read Piper Laurie had just died. What are the odds?

RIP Ms. Laurie, you were bloody fantastic in Carrie.
