My thoughts after seeing this for the first time

Some people LOVE this movie, some HATE it. I liked it. The slow-motion scene was too long, most scenes were good and only a few were disturbing. That's what I was hoping for, to be disturbed. Especially with what I read about the final scene and the prom scene. Prom scene was cool, final scene was weak. I really enjoyed the scenes with the mother. Especially the one where she cuts vegetables. So; solid acting, respectable directing, crazy story makes for a good film. 7/10

Something you may not know...

They recorded that “slow” scene with Amy Irving walking BACKWARDS.

People were puzzled for years as to why that sequence has a weird quality about it that they couldn’t put their finger on.

Watch it again...

huh, interesting! I will!

Yes, I've noticed that as well. But, why, HASH? Is that mistake, or, intentional?

reply

Intentional.

When DePalma floated the idea, Irving bragged that she was good at walking backwards.

Definitely, SK. The film is defined & saved by Piper Laurie. She's legitimate, resourceful & thoroughly professional. The steadfastness of the character. Had to have an actor of impeccable ability and the production found her. & De Palma is comfortable with her, stages her precisely each time he features her. The long black cape at the Snell home. The meticulous flowing hair over pure white in the White home.

De Palma doesn't kill it. Gives us just enough of her that we want more, but, doesn't give in to our want. Does not appease us.

The start of the Snell home scene...a leveled (swish) of the black cape (watch it) at the far edge of the Snell driveway defines the character there. A, well, perhaps a nod to the ***"Wizard of Oz" and the witch there.

The perceived beautiful purity of mother White in the home canonizes the character on-contact. De Palma christens her, set her on high. If it's not done to this level of perfection it's just another slasher movie in broad daylight.

***It's incredible as one watches movies post WOZ how much homage is paid & used from that film.

To me the most disturbing and terrifying scene of the whole film was when Piper Laurie started to flip out and locked Carrie in that room 😱

I laughed at the prom scene
when the fire hose became animated 😄
and agree the final scene was weak.

Overall I thought it was good, also a 7/10. Some great scenes and great acting, but it went off the rails.
