Doesnt anyone else think the gym teacher went to far.

I'm suprised she didn't lose her jumping for cusing in front of the students and slapping Carrie and Chris.

i think they deserved it, but slapping Chris was goin to far.

1. I had at least two teachers in high school who cursed (including the S word, like Miss Collins uttered). Sometimes it just slips out even on the job. These are high school students...they can handle profanity at random/isolated intervals

2. She slapped Carrie in a sense to say "Come back to reality" as opposed to "you deserve to be whooped!"

3. Going too far with Chris? That's debatable. Chris definitely pushed her buttons and I'm of the belief she caused trouble for Miss Collins on multiple occasions. As a result, Collins reacted with the slap. Obviously there's the case it went too far, i.e. in the 1970s that level of physical contact was de facto prohibited. Then again, given Chris's obstinate hostility, it's understandable and perhaps Collins, under that circumstance, would be expected to do worse, such as smack her a few times

When God made Tom Cruise, he was only joking.

While it's true it seems kids and especially teenagers nowadays are more often tan before and that that's probably due in big part to a lack of discipline, that doesn't mean physical violence is the answer. Respect is not the same as fear and authority is not the same as intimidation.

That said, Chris was an evil b*tch and deserved it!.

I think Miss Collins had to severely punish the girls for being mean to Carrie to give a reason for their hatred of her.

If a teacher cursed in front of students in my high school they would probably be laughed at.

Slapping Carrie could've been done out of necessity to break her out of her state of shock when she first had her period. Slapping Chris should've and in real life would've gotten her arrested and thrown in the slammer.

This was the 70s before the world turned soft, the 80s was still a lot like this.

It was the 70's, it was a different time.

I probably would not have hit kids....but I think cursing is fine. They say much worse actually.

I had a teacher in one of my classes who was trying to show us a movie re history and it contained curse words in it. But there was no violence no sex no drugs. Well the principal still got upset with the teacher?? Hello??

I know someone who tossed a student a pencil because the student needed a pencil and the student and mother said they were going to press assault charges. Apparently the pencil stabbed the student in the finger then rebounded and came back at her and stabbed her again, that is one magic pencil. Fortunately they realized a day later it was ridiculous
