I guess I must be the only one that found the two leading characters despicable.

They probably are despicable on paper, and they would have being with two non-charismatic actors in the roles, but with Connery and Caine in the parts, they were funny and extremely likeable.

They were scammers, no different than any other set of grifters. If you are okay with these two, you are okay with the rest of them.
