What happened to Lightfoot in the end? (spoilers)

What did Lightfoot die from in the end?

When they get to the schoolhouse he seems OK. He limps a little, but also runs down the embankment. He seems fine as they get the stashed loot. Cut to Thunderbolt driving a new Cadillac picking up Lightfoot from the side of the road who all of a sudden seems to be having serious problems with his leg. He hobbles into the Cadillac. They drive a little, fire up cigars and he dies... WTF? I just don't get what he's supposed to have died from?

Sounded to me like a brain hemorrhage suffered from the savage beating that Red gave him.

Yeah, I guess you're right.

He looked like he was doing OK though, certainly didn't look like he was dying.

A frustrating and confusing end to a good movie.

I guess the brain swelling sneaked up on him. I honestly don't know if he would have gone from conscious to dead within minutes so long after the beating. Maybe someone in the medical field can comment on that.
