Touching story, but why did he fall so hard for Billie?

She didn't seem to have much of a personality. Not much to offer besides the willing sex. Plus, even though he was kind and open-minded, her reputation in town was really bad and would have eventually caused problems in their relationship even if those guys had not done what they did.

I hate to psychoanalyze it, but maybe she was a female surrogate for his awkward, misfit male friend, Whitie the albino (played by future Freddie Krueger).

At first it was sexual, but then they clicked. They were simply soul mates. Sometimes you don't understand why people are attracted to each other. They found out that they loved being together and understood each other.

The choices:
(1) A shallow, status-minded girl insensitive to your wants and needs.
(2) A sweet girl you feel at ease with, someone who reciprocates all the little things you do for her, a girl who appreciates the real you because you saw the real her.

I'd pick (2). I think Buster fell for her initially because of her shyness, her sweet smile, and her complete disinclination to babble about the things that his girlfriend at the time thought so important. With Billie he felt no judgment right from the start. Hell, I fell for Billie myself. She brings out that protective instinct among some men. She also has that diamond in the rough quality, that pretty but not beautiful aura that can make you feel you alone have identified a jewel.
