finally read the original planet of the apes book

This movie took quite a few ideas from it, only they applied them to Zira and company on Earth instead of Ulysse (the Taylor character's name in the book) among the ape society on Soror.

Ulysse is more passive. This is an exception in which I like the movie better than the book

What people miss is that the book is mostly a satire. The idea of the Planet of the Apes is borrowed directly from Jonathan Swift's satirical novel "Gulliver's Travels", specifically the "Houyhnhnm" section.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houyhnhnm

"Houyhnhnms are a fictional race of intelligent horses described in the last part of Jonathan Swift's satirical 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels. The Houyhnhnms are rational equine beings and are masters of the land, contrasting strongly with the Yahoos, savage humanoid creatures who are no better than beasts of burden, or livestock."

The most successful Apes film are the first and third ones because, while they are effective as sci-fi action adventure films, what really makes them work are the satirical social commentary. The rest of the apes series lacked this and suffered. Beneath, Battle and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes suffered due to being too on the nose and literal and not satirical enough. There are parts of the original and Escape that are very funny and bitingly satirical.
