Were the two hitchhikers lesbians?

I've seen the movie 2 or 3 times and I never got the impression that they were, but -- then again -- I didn't analyze it that deeply. I read a review today, however, that insisted the two hitchhikers were lesbians. Did anyone else get this impression? If so, please supply your evidence.

(Please no clichéd responses like, "So what if they were, what's the big deal?"; this is a legitimate question. Thanks).

It's a matter of perspective based on the time period the viewer watches the film in. Pre-1990s, they were just friends. If you saw it from the 1990s on, they are lesbians.
