Odd Scene


Its early morning when Rooster & La Bouef cross the river to begin tracking Ned Pepper & his gang.They attempt to ditch Mattie by galloping away from her but she pursues them.After she catches up with them she mentions that its dinner time.
Huh? How did that much time elapse from the early morning chase?

I believe in the South, lunch is sometimes referred to as Dinner and the evening meal as supper? Not sure though.

You are correct, I gre up in Indiana and dinner was in the middle of the day and the evening meal was supper.

I grew up in the 1950s and in Australia lunch was called dinner. "Sunday dinner", a roast meal and Christmas dinner were always at lunchtime.

I grew up in Philadelphia PA, and we had lunch at noon and dinner at night. But visiting my grandmother 60 miles away in Lancaster, PA, they had dinner at noon and supper at night.

I think it's a generational thing. I'm from Pittsburgh and the old folks use dinner as meaning lunch. I rarely hear the term used like that from anyone younger than 70.

I grew up in the north and have lived in the south for 40 years. I never heard "dinner" refer to lunch unless it was Sunday dinner, which was often served in early to mid afternoon. "Supper" of course meant the evening meal.

The meaning of "dinner" may have changed over the course of the 20th century, making "dinner" at noon or in the early afternoon was a widespread thing in the 1900s.

I think it held on in the South longer than other places, though.
