IMO this is a very stupid line.
If he's referring to Sean Connery as a previous agent (meaning they are not the same character) how would he know something like that never happened to the other fellow. If he wasn't referring to Sean Connery then who was he talking about?
This movie doesn't make things clear enough which I elaborated on in my previous post.

I never liked the line but I do like how it spawned the theory that the name James Bond was actually a code name passed down the line to whomever occupied the 007 rank. Pretty cool idea to link the actors' films.

But breaking the 4th wall in a Bond film is shitty. Still a decent movie in the franchise. I like it more than most of the Moore ones.
