The first zombie

Why doesn't he eat Johnny and instead runs after Barbara? Is he a sexist?

reply

I'll go out on a limb and say that Johnny died instantly when he hit the tombstone and that particular zombie prefers fresh living meat to dead meat.

Of course that's not the case for all of them since quite a few enjoy munching down on some toasted Tom and Judy Jambalaya.

Perhaps the zombies became desperate as the evening dragged on, taking whatever they could get though still preferring living flesh.

He ordered his meal To Go.

The Cemetery Zombie was not only driven by hunger but by lust when he pursued Barbra.

reply

Can't say that I blame him, she's a sweetheart!

Hell yeah! I also thought Barbra was cute and clearly a bad-ass escaping the Cemetery Zombie. It's just too bad she got torn apart by her brother Johnny and the rest of the ravenous horde...

That was a horrific scene!

Yes, her horrible fate really bummed me out and for years I was pissed at Romero for doing that to her. But at least Barbra had better luck in Tom Savini's remake so all was not lost.

reply

In the original story, Barbara was supposed to be the survivor but the idea was scrapped.

reply

Even tho Barbra was able to escape him, I loved the Cemetery Zombie. He set the standard for zombies the world over. Long live Bill Hinzman!

reply

I really do love the way he is wandering in the background of the scene for a while, in a very unhurried way, and even wanders over to Johnny and Barbra, and then when he is close enough, suddenly goes "Eeeeyugh!" and flips into zombie mode.

As to why he chased Barbra, oh, I think he was just greedy. His haircut kind of had that "greedy bastard" look to it.

I think Romero said in an interview, "We wanted his hair to convey the idea that he was greedy in life, and that he would continue being greedy as a zombie, sort of a remembered behavior thing. Some kind of memory, instinct..greed was an important thing in his life. The first zombie is the kind of guy who would come to Thanksgiving dinner and want to eat the whole turkey and then the ham too. And then he might steal your silverware for good measure..."

reply

Haha... so true! He probably went back for seconds of poor Tom and Judy.

reply

I'd never before heard of Romero's comments about the "greediness"....interesting. A couple of other ideas about "Cemetery Zombie": Just what was "he" doing there? 1) Was he an actual body that was supposed to be buried but the workmen decided to take a dinner break & left to come back & finish later? Then he reanimates while in the casket & breaks out & climbs out of the grave? (His suit looked to bear dirt marks). 2) Maybe he was homeless or a drifter, etc & "lived" in the woods near the cemetery. Then he dies from pneumonia or exposure & is drawn to Barbra's & Johnnie's voices?

There's a deleted scene in the 25th anniversary edition of the film where it's presumed he was executed for killing a little girl, his funeral is shown with just the priest and the girls parents then next scene two gravediggers are starting to bury him when he reanimates and tries to attack them. He manages to get out of the coffin and they freak out and run away, thus leaving him to wander the cemetery until Barbara and Johnny appear.

reply

I like that they killed Barbra off, it made the movie more realistic and dreary. In the remake, they went with the typical and cliché horror movie ending where the lead female can survive anything.

I think something in between would be good; Barbara survives but is an emotional wreck.

reply

Yeah that would have been good, like Sally at the end of Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Chris at the end of Friday the 13th Part 3.

Seems simple enough to me. Johnny was down and the noise and movement Barbara was making attracted his attention.

reply

Exactly, zombies are like kids or animals in the mind and are easily distracted, Barbara should've slowly walked away and he wouldn't have followed, at least not until he was done eating Johnny.

That was my take. It clearly depends on the zombie too, because some will stop and munch while others chase. I guess they're really just human after all! People are like that too, with the exception of wide scale human flesh consumption.

reply

A better question is why the fuck did Johnny come back as a zombie? He died because his head was smacked hard against a tombstone, presumably dying of brain damage.

Maybe he was just meant to have a broken neck and it was filmed at a weird angle?
