Why didn't they lock up Gilligan?

Every time they had a chance to get off the island, it was Gilligan who screwed it up. So when they had a chance, why didn't they lock him up so he couldn't do anything to screw it up?

Gilligan screwed up a few times, but a lot of the times it was the others who were the screw-ups. In You've Been Disconnected, Gilligan did the right thing by covering those cables, because they would have gotten ruined otherwise. He was blamed unfairly in that one.

Skipper screwed up in The Friendly Physician.

All of the others EXCEPT Gilligan screwed up in The Big Gold Strike

In President Gilligan, he wanted to build a lookout tower, which was a pretty good idea, but nobody would help him. Had the Professor suggested that, they would have been all for it.

In Smile, You're On Mars Camera, the others angrily chase Gilligan into the thing of feathers with glue stuck to them. Instead of chasing after him, they should have stayed in front of the camera. As usual, Gilligan gets the blame.

In Quick, Before It Sinks, the Professor should have told the others that he had a measuring stick in the water. Gilligan should have asked what it was, though, before moving it. Professor and Gilligan were both at fault for that.

In Physical Fatness, Gilligan is eating a bunch of stuff. Professor sits the dye next to him and tells him to keep eating. Gilligan naturally would think it's food, and eats it. As usual, ONLY Gilligan gets blamed.

So no, it wasn't always his fault.

"So no, it wasn't always his fault."

You are citing a handful of examples that only serve to 'defend Gilligan' instead of refuting the actual point.

The actual point being, even if it's factually wrong to say Gilligan always screwed it up, locking him up early would definitely have been a good idea, considering how many things he DID screw up, so the original point stands - why would they allow him to roam free after they realized how many things he constantly screws up? Makes no sense.

He should (and realistically, would) have absolutely been restrained in some way. This procedure would definitely have allowed them to be rescued or escape the island, regardless of your handful of examples where others also screwed up things.

I think you just want to defend Gilligan for some reason, but if he had been shot dead or fallen into a coma the first episode, do you honestly think they could not have escaped/been rescued?

I never understood why it's called 'Gilligan's Island', though - does he somehow purchase this island or get some kind of allodial title to it? Why would the most bumbling fool of the group own the whole island they are accidentally stranded on?

It makes no sense.. Gilligan doesn't own the island, but even if he does, he shouldn't. It should be called something entirely different, like 'a group of idiots got themselves stranded and can't get back'. I guess it wouldn't have been as catchy, but I only point out things that make no sense, I am not a name-inventor.

It wasn't just to defend Gilligan, I like all the other Castaways too, I'm just saying there were times where he was blamed that weren't his fault. Should the Skipper be locked up for not securing the boat right in The Friendly Physician? Should the Professor be locked up for reading the stone tablets wrong in The Secret of Gilligan's Island? No, they all made mistakes, and Gilligan did, too, I was just naming the times where he gets blamed just because he's Gilligan. Heck, a lot of times, they would all be dead if it wasn't for Gilligan rescuing them.
