Poorly scripted, poorly executed & hyped junk

Last night i saw this film and i was badly disappointed by everything. Let me explain it to you.

I am not expecting a 1963 movie from 2023 standards but i saw it with pretty good expectations and also it had an imdb rating of 8.2 so, my expectations were not really low.

There were plenty of scenes where i was getting sick of it overall. The whole escape plan was absurd and whoever wrote the script was high on some drug. (i am assuming this is not based on a true escape). They made plan for 3 tunnels, tom, dick and harry and then later closed the other two and only went with one. Two would have been much sensible plan than one.

Secondly, the main and biggest turn off for me was, when they escaped out, their heads turned upside down and all of them started becoming lunatic. Everyone had to make some noise to attract the nazis to catch them again. They could lay low for a few days, and then escape quietly but all of them started making apparent that they have escaped. The only sensible one who managed to escape was the one who remained slent and under the hood.

Charles Bronson's character being claustrophobic was stretched too far. It also became painful to watch.

Now i come to the second biggest turn off for me. The almighty, the big foot -Steve Mcqueen- the moment you give him a motor bike (and as per his previous bike scenes from movies) i immediately knew that now he will bump himself into wires and blockades and will run the bike here and there aimlessly for greater screen time to show that he is Steve Mcqueen and he needs some heroic stunts to be able to sell more tickets in the theatre. He was an absolute pain in the back to see while he was doing aimless, useless and pointless stunts with bike all over those fields. The script writer went out of the way to give him more screen time. This was an absolute nightmare.

Even back in time, there were good prison break movies which were seriously made but this one was just a nightmare. 8.2 is totally not understandable on imdb.

I hope i didn't create waves for the classic lovers. This is what i felt.

In a few days it will be the 80th anniversary of the escape.

(i am assuming this is not based on a true escape)

And with this comment I'm assuming you are just trolling.

So, my points were baseless? Prove it.

reply

You point that it's not based on a true escape when it is, in fact, based on a true escape, kind of makes your points baseless.

reply

If it's based on a true escape, then its one of the worst escapes ever planned, where whoever escaped, became lunatic and invited nazis to recapture them.

reply

dumbass mf didn't even bother to read the opening text.

reply

It was based on a true escape.
If you saw the movie in the theatre in 1963 you would have loved it.

As absurd as the escape plan may have seemed to you, it was real. You can see where the tunnel was here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/zSzjzcbJ4MuYWo1n8

Cool link. I loved the movie, and then I loved the book.

It's just that you so obviously didn't see it in the theatre when it came out. Were you not born yet? To appreciate this movie you would have had to be born and see it when it came out. Other than that, we all have a right to our views on movies, old or new. Of course a lot of it was stereotyped stuff. All movies were. ALL, including big Oscar winners. Just so you know. Ben Hur, Gigi? Really so great? What's a great, non stereotypical, non junk movie for you? I have a few faves, but I admit they are loaded with stereotypes. Gone with the Wind, Brief Encounter? Love them, but loaded with stuff that is painful to watch. You cannot escape this. Greatest movie in the world (whatever is currently): Citizen Kane, Vertigo? I love them, yet they are full of errors, pretensions, stereotypes, plot holes. You cannot get away from that. Try.

reply

If movies did not have stereotypes no one would understand or relate to them. I think there are valid things to criticize about TGE, but this guy is just trolling. They had to keep it simple and light, a mythological retelling of a true story. The book was great.

reply

This is a WWII classic. I think the problem is you. The story for the most part is true. I read the book when I was a kid. Too bad your inner-troll took over and your could not enjoy a movie tens, maybe hundreds of millions loved.
