Seeming Main Character Dies Early (Attention Wankers: SPOILER ALERTS!)

How many movies have imitated the unusual decision to kill off a (seemingly) main character early in the film?

reply

Err… spoiler?

reply

I'm really trying to be a nice person, so I'm not going to say that your comment was as much idiotic as it was uncalled for. I'm not going to say that.

reply

A "nice person" doesn't post spoilers in the title.

"How many movies have imitated the unusual decision to kill off a (seemingly) main character early in the film?"

Gee, are there any more movies we can spoil by revealing a main character gets killed off early?

Titles and details please.

On second thought, no. Never mind.

You're free to just not participate. But because you have severe control issues, you felt the need to lecture a stranger on the Internet.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to be blunt again:

Go fuck yourself.

I understand because you're a control freak, you will insist on responding despite the fact that I've made it clear your opinion on any matter is invalid due to your mental health problem(s). I will go ahead and allow you to have the last word and then I will consider this conversation over.

reply

DAMN...YOU'RE RUDE.

COMING FROM YOU, THAT'S QUITE THE COMPLIMENT!

"I'm afraid I'm going to have to be blunt again:"

Translation: I am losing the argument so I will resort to profanity and ad hominem personal attacks. Very common.

I am uncommon.

No "daycare center" necessary. REAL MEN (like me) and WOMEN WHO LOVE REAL MEN understand that it is common courtesy to not include spoilers in the titles of threads. If there is a spoiler in the body of the text you type *SPOILER* beforehand. Anybody who has not seen the film will not read the spoiler.

I have learned from experience to avoid movie message boards until I have seen the film. There are too many childish and low I.Q. posters that include spoilers.

Do you understand now?

reply

No, dickhead, my comment was accurate and necessary, and you’ve conceded that by adding an after-the-fact ‘SPOILER ALERT’ since.

It’s not good enough though, the spoiler alert must come before the spoiler, not after. Better still, save the spoiler for the main text and keep it out of the title altogether.

You’re at a crossroads. You will either fix it and apologise, or you will cement your reputation as a fucking twat who is deliberately spoiling one of the best films ever made.

Let’s hope you have the humility to choose the former…

reply

So, two idiots have mentioned "spoiler alert." If you don't know what happens in Psycho, you're not ready to discuss it. You shouldn't be on this board in the first place. I asked a simple question about movies that employ a similar tactic. I guess I'm asking too much of some people here. Perhaps moviechat could install a daycare center for people who want to be treated like children?

reply

OR?...YOU COULD TRY BEING NICER...JUST A LITTLE BIT?...IT REALLY WOULDN'T HURT.

reply

I did. I even announced I was going to be nicer. Then these fucking clowns show up and demonstrate what's wrong with this site (and the Internet in general).

I do not like control freaks, Mr./Mrs. Kowalski.

reply

DON'T ADD TO THE PROBLEM...WE ARE ALL GUILTY OF IT AT TIMES...MYSELF MORE THAN INCLUDED...BUT MOVIECHAT DOESN'T NEED THAT KIND OF ACTIVITY.

reply

OK. I WILL BE NICER.

reply

I HAVE BEEN MAKING AN ACTIVE EFFORT MYSELF.

WHAT ARE SANDY'S FIVE FAVORITE FILMS?

reply

(aka ecarle.)

There is an interesting conundrum here.

I , too believe that one should never come to these boards to read about a movie until AFTER you see the movie -- whether a new release this month or a movie from decades ago. To discuss these movies, we have to spoil these movies.

I learned my lesson at the old imdb boards when I looked at the Million Dollar Baby page BEFORE seeing the movie. Somebody gave away the entire end of the movie(TWO plot twists) in the heading.

I never did THAT again. Only come to the Board AFTER you see the movie.

With "Psycho"(which ALSO has two plot twists -- maybe three)...it is wise to only come here after seeing the movie. I know certain scenes are very famous, but new generations don't know them at all.

But here comes the problem:

The OP question is: what OTHER films have "early exits" (deaths) for stars?

And to name ANY of those films is ...to spoil them, too.

But here is the OTHER problem:

I've seen a lot of movies, and I have seen a LOT of "early exit" scenes, and ...I think they are fun to discuss if one has seen them alll.

The only way out, I believe, is for me to do the following:

I'm going to put in my next post: SPOILERS FOR EVERY MOVIE EVER MADE.

The reader can risk reading about all those "early exits" I am about to list. Maybe you saw the movies, maybe you didn't...but if you want to know, you've got to get spoiled.

ALSO: I am going to try to use that mechanism that "blacks out" all spoilers. I can't always get it to work, but maybe this time...

SPOILERS FOR EVERY MOVIE EVER MADE:

Here are some "early exits" of name stars in movies:

Scream: Drew Barrymore is killed off in the opening scene, before the credits!
Dressed to Kill: In Brian DePalma's 1980 quasi-remake of Psycho, Angie Dickenson has the Janet Leigh role, and dies early slashed to death in an elevator that is the "shower scene" of this movie.
Deep Blue Sea: "Super-sharks" attack an undersea compound. Top billed star Samuel L. Jackson takes command: "Now the first thing we're gonna do is..." ...and two sharks attack and kill him, just like that.
Executive Decision: Amateur Kurt Russell and military commander Steven Seagal are boarding a hijacked plane in mid-air, "sneaking aboard." Russell and others make it aboard. Seagal sacrifices himself and is flung from the plane to his death.
Marathon Man: Freshly minted star Roy Scheider(fresh from Jaws) plays the superspy brother of NYC nerd Dustin Hoffman. Roy is killed before the movie is half over -- by "frail old Laurence Oliver" -- a double twist.
15 Minutes: The only things I remember about this movie are that Robert DeNiro is the star...and gets killed well before the end.
LA Confidential: Kevin Spacey gets killed out of nowhere at the 2/3 mark...by a surprise bad guy.
