I'm been watching season 1 and Barney referred Andy has his cousin. So far I think Barney said it three of four times in season 1. The runaway kid and the first episode.

I believe it was once stated that their mothers were sisters. Not 100% sure.

They didn't keep continuity well in these shows. I said this in another thread. But in the season 3 episode Opie and the spoiled kid, Andy says he didn't know Barny's father. Yet another episode in the same season has them say they've known each other since they were kids.
