Why on earth? It adds nothing to the movie whatsoever.
sharepeople like to rattle on about the accent, its not so bad, it was so built up before i saw it i was expecting something much worse and have seen worse in many a modern film.

I came on this message board wondering if anyone else found Orson Welles accent quite bad, I see there are a few! lol. It is bad and seems to drift in and out at times, It almost seemed quite comical too, as if he was about to say things like 'they're after my lucky charms!'. To be honest I wasn't to impressed with Glenn Anders acting as Grisby either, instead of being a quite intense character or someone you might describe as a creep he just comes across as daft and again quite comical.
The film I thought suffered because of it, which is a shame as the last hour is quite good especially with the Film Noir touches.

I didn't like his Irish accent. James Mason does a good Irish brogue in another noir, 'The Reckless Moment' (1949). But Orson Welles voice grated on me.

I only watched The Reckless Moment the other night! Good film and yes James Mason's accent was a lot softer and realistic, Joan Bennett did a good job in her role too.

The bigger problem is that his character is such a dope. And, honestly, this guy has never seen a Film Noir, and isn't able to spot a femme fatale a mile away? Sheesh.
shareHis utterly unconvincing Irish accent really hurts the movie, I much prefer his normal voice. In the book that this story is adapted from his character is called Laurence Planter not Michael O'Hara.
