I know he was "invited" by Katherine, but why? How did they ever become acquainted? She just reached out to some dude in Europe and asked him to come visit her in the American south?

I thought she had made a trip to Europe and met him there. Though I guess the real answer is they wanted to make a Dracula movie where a relative of his comes to America. I find it funny they made this more a sequel to the novel instead of the original movie.
