I and the American Film Institute agree!

The first 5 animated films that Walt Disney ever made are considered timeless by most people...
1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
2. Pinocchio
3. Fantasia
4. Dumbo
5. Bambi

And the American Film Institute has four of these films in the top 5 animated films of all time! That should really say something!!

These movies do indeed have a timeless vibe to them - someone not schooled in animation would have a tough time pinning down the dates just by looking.

However, I am amused at how some little musical cues are slipped into these early movies that could hip someone to a certain time frame:

Snow White - while Dopey is playing drums, a bee starts buzzing him and he goes after it furiously, making with a Gene Krupa-style drum break

Pinocchio - Honest John is spouting a bunch of medical-sounding double talk, concluding with something out of 'Flat Foot Floogie (with a Floy-Floy)'

Fantasia - between numbers, a clarinetist starts doing some swing-style noodling, and others join in in turn, until Mr. Taylor returns

Dumbo - the hallucinatory pink elephants break into a spirited rhumba

Why wouldn't it be? There's nothing that really dates the film, barring maybe the Sunflower character, but she's not in most versions. It is an animated masterpiece that, just like the music it uses, was born to be timeless!

The scenario's may not all be timeless. The mythological creatures from Beethoven's 6th have caused some controversies over the years. The animals in The Rite of Spring are no longer scientifically accurate. But the movie is not about that. It's about the music, animation and the overall emotional experience.

- The music is as timeless as it can be. People still listen to these classical pieces.

- The animation still looks better than most animated productions today, even if the technology to create it has improved.

- I still don't think there's any movie that rivals Fantasia in the unique emotional experience it provides. They did a sequel called 60 years later, and it wasn't as great.

So there you have it, the film has withstood the test of time.

Just started watched this on Netflix having never seen it before. Can't believe it was made in 1940! I've always wanted to see this but never got round to it - feels pretty timeless to me, the animation is wonderful and the music will last forever. Something very special about this - like artists were allowed to be free to go wherever they wanted. Can't wait to watch this again!

It's timeless to me in the same way of something like Metropolis, there is just some sort of special atmosphere to get lost in and combined with the visuals it's cinematic nirvana.

I just can't get over how ambitious and vivid this film is, few things are really like it and it's a wonderful introduction to this beautiful music for younger viewers.

Absolutely! I first saw it in the early 90s on VHS when my kids were little. Just picked up the Blu-ray set of Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 and am watching the original now. Excellent audio and video and the music and images are timeless IMHO.
