Which is the best version?

Hi,

Which is the best film of All Quiet on the Western Front? This or the 1979 version? I want the one most loyal to the books. Thanks x

hi duck,

meeting on another board...(((g)))

i know the book and i know the milestone- version from 1930 - both belonged to my favs when i was young; and i always felt the film very near to the novel, so i never had an interest to watch the remake at all.

in my eyes the film is a masterpiece and one of the best and most impressing and touching films against war (the very most touching for me is "jeux interdits/forbidden games" by rene clement - if you can find a chance: watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LafUQYHSnhU)

The 1979 version really is pretty good. Richard "John Boy" Thomas is pretty believable as Paul and though not as gritty as the original "Katz" Ernest Borgnine does a nice job in that role. The story stays pretty close to the original.

With the new version out I also wondered which of the 3 was the best. So I just checked the imdb rating and decided to watch from the very first one, the 1930 version onwards.

Still need to watch the new one, but I can say that the 1930 version is really really good and amazing for its time. Citizen Kane and Gone with the wind both came years later, its amazing, that this movie is that good, considering that at that time most movies were much simpler/comedy. Chaplin already made more complex movies, but they are especially today, not very compatible for today's people. This one still works today.

I just watched this one, I never knew there were two other versions. I bet the 2022 one has partial nudity and foul language. Maybe even graphic violence, then again, maybe not.

However, the special effects in this one was cool for the 30's.
