He defended pederasty on a theoretical basis as a rhetorical exercise. He was trying to shove it in the face of the left. It was a free speech moment to test the limits. Of course that killed his career.
Or it could be that he is attracted to underage boys and he was just expressing his honest views on the matter arguing that pederasty should be acceptable.
