WTF? She only had to pay $1m of the $13m she owed him?

Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million dollars in punitive damages. The jury awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages.

In December, Heard announced that she and Depp had settled their defamation suit, writing on Instagram that she had "made no admission" and that the settlement is "not an act of concession."

"I make this decision having lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and social media fodder," Heard said in her post.

Damages owed to Depp by Heard were reduced to $1 million as part of the agreement, which Depp's attorneys said in a statement at the time he pledged to donate to charity.

"We are pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who made clear throughout the process that his priority was about bringing the truth to light," said Depp's attorneys Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez.

Lame after all that...

What was the settlement? If Heard is still insisting that Depp 'abused her', I don't see what Depp got out of it. Admittedly, that may be damning on his part, since there may be stuff that has been hidden to protect him, but, at face-value, it looks like he went easy on her, and allowed her only to pay a fraction of what she owed, whilst she continued to double-down on the finger-pointing and accusations. What gives? 🤷‍♂️

She didn't settle the case, she was still found guilty, they just agreed to settle the payment at $1 million instead of $10 million because she was never realistically going to be able to pay that amount.

They settled the award/penalty, but NOT the verdict. The verdict still stands. But since Amber still insists Depp abused her, what does he get out of the 'settlement'?

reply

The woman who defamed him now has no career. He gets to work again. He is vindicated.

Public opinion did a 180. Maybe in the future the next lying sack of shit that thinks she can score a payday like Amber Heard did will think twice.

What does he get from the settlement (i.e. the reduction in the award to only $1 million)? And if it was a gesture of clemency towards her, why even insist on *any* payment?
