It used to be in moments of tragedy there were almost instantly jokes being shared. That's no longer acceptable, and one would probably be banned from Twitter, or wherever, for making jokes about this. Gallows humor is no longer in vogue, so I will refrain from wondering if any player will perform a helicopter dunk in Kobe's honor at the All-Star Weekend dunk contest. Likewise I won't speculate that everyone's first thought upon learning about Kobe's death was "damn, why not Lebron instead?"

Jokes aside, this is devastating. Kobe had already given us so much, but it really felt like he was only getting started. He won an Oscar within a couple years of retiring from basketball, and was such a boon to humanity on many levels. He leaves a void no one can fill.

lol This was actually one of my very first thoughts. I won't miss Kobe, but I would have taken LeBron instead

Kobe raped a woman in Colorado. Now i guess the metoo movement doesnt matter now???

Kobe was accused by a teenaged, schizophrenic girl, who refused to testify in court, and no case was ever brought to trial. Big difference.

ANY THREAD ABOUT KOBE IS BEING SLIMED OVER BY 2 OR 3 TROLLS REPEATING THEIR CUTE COMMENTS.

He admitted wrong doing and settled out of court. You don’t settle if you’re innocent. When she brought charges she was villified and tortured by lovers of Kobe lovers like you and couldn’t go thru a trial. You’re an uneducated slug to look the other way on this

He admitted to having had consensual sex with her, and nothing more. Individuals and corporations routinely settle out of court to avoid the time and cost and risk of litigation. Paying a settlement is in no way an indicator of guilt, only of common sense.

Insult me all you want. You seem to think you know what happened, I openly admit that I don't We have two sides to the story, and to me, Kobe Byrant's side made more sense than that of his accuser. Since we can never know, it's all speculation, so when you say he raped someone, you are expressing your opinion as if it were fact.

He won an Oscar huh. LOL Why do all of those actors train their entire lives and very few win the big Oscar award. Oh yeah, this is a publicity stunt. To me this hurts his legacy to have an Oscar. Why does this man who earned, EARNED so many great things need this little trophy GIVEN to him. It's idiotic.

Did you see the short piece for which he won the best animated short Oscar? I think he earned it as much as he earned any other awards or accolades.
