I think she will win both the Golden Globe and the Oscar.

Variety's film awards editor says that Kristen is currently the frontrunner of the Best Actress Oscar Race. So let's hope it stays that way:

2022 OSCARS PREDICTIONS:
BEST ACTRESS

UPDATED: Dec 16, 2021

AWARDS PREDICTION COMMENTARY:
Kristen Stewart leads the critics’ prizes for her turn as Princess Diana in “Spencer” from Pablo Larrain. The Neon and Topic Studios drama may be incredibly divided with general audiences. Still, there’s an appreciation and respect to what she brings to the role, and she may have reached her moment in the awards circle after being passed over for strong outings in films like “Clouds of Sils Maria.”

Her biggest competition seems to be Lady Gaga as the murderous Patrizia Reggiani in “House of Gucci” from Ridley Scott. However, she’s already picking up a very high-profile win from the New York Film Critics Circle; she’s working the circuit and seems prime for her second acting nomination.

Whether of not Kristen will remain the frontrunner has yet to be seen. But one thing that is almost certain is the Best Actress Oscar winner will be one who is portraying a famous person:

Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana
Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani
Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball

Speaking on the topic of embodying real-life people, last year's Best Actress Oscar winner Frances McDormand won the golden statuette for portraying a lackluster, nondescript, uninspiring and fictitious character who lived her life as a nomad and formed no emotional connection with any of the other characters in the film. I mean, there is no point of reference on whether or not McDormand convincingly and realistically portrayed her character Fern, as Fern never existed.

So I don't understand why some naysayers are splitting hairs on Kristen's performance, claiming she did not look or sound exactly like the most famous woman of the 20th century and for this reason should not win an Oscar. In my opinion, Kristen came as close as any actress has ever come to realistically portraying Diana Spencer on the big screen and for this very reason is worthy of the golden statuette.

Of course, Kristen winning still depends on whether Kristen's portrayal was superior to that of Lady Gaga and Nicole Kidman, who also portrayed famous people. And to be fair, they too have naysayers, as the haters claim Kidman looks nothing like Lucille Ball while Lady Gaga had a Russian accent, not the Italian one she should have had in House of Gucci.

Nice, good for her. The Nominations are not really a surprise given all the excellent reviews. I hope she at least gets an Oscar nom also.

Thanks for posting these.

It seems to be a lock Ron that Kristen will receive an Oscar nom as all the major trade publications, film awards prediction sites and several mainstream media sources are predicting she will at the very least be nominated:

‘Spencer’ Official Trailer: Kristen Stewart Is a Best Actress Oscar Frontrunner
Kristen Stewart has earned rave reviews for her performances as the British royal.
Neon’s first trailer for “Spencer” only lasted one minute and included just one brief line of dialogue from Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, so it’s an understatement that fans will find a lot more to savor in the “Spencer” official trailer below. Pablo Larraín’s latest directorial effort is set over a single weekend as Diana contemplates the end of her marriage to Prince Charles. “Spencer” debuted to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival, where Stewart became an instant Oscar contender in the Best Actress race.

reply

LLOwens, Very nice. Those are indeed quite high praise for her! Of course it makes more and more sense that she's a lock for a Nomination. All the reviews I've seen have raved about her performance! Plus the many you list there.

Some of those reviews are recent, near the end of the year, so the reviewers are still praising her heavily.

I'm looking forward to how things go, should be pretty fun. I'm going to see the film this week, probably tomorrow.

I noticed you left a comment on my most recent edit Ron, but I deleted the video and re-uploaded it as I forgot to add clips from Kristen's performance in On the Road in order to validate its title which is Kristen Stewart - Career Tribute (All Her Films): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3sDapF85UQ&t=9s

reply

Hehe, yes on your video site I saw a comment that OTR was missing. :) Well done video though, like I said. Reminders of her movies, ones I hadn't seen in a while and from when she was a kid such as her first role in Safety of Objects.

reply

Nice music video, LL. I am especially glad that you included the short film Cutlass in the vid. Now all you'll have to do is re-edit it one more time once Crimes of the Future gets released.
Oh yeah, I also liked that you chose Fade Into You by Mazzy Star as the song in the video. Hope Sandoval's vocals are just mesmerizing in that song.

Speaking of which, I had included that song in one of my more recent compilation cds, which I titled Of This Land, the name of the first song on it. All of the songs feature women vocalists.
The tracklist is ...
. 1) Clannad - Of This Land
. 2) Heart - Dog & Butterfly
. 3) k.d. lang - After the Gold Rush (a cover of the Neil Young song)
. 4) Bonnie Raitt - I Can't Make You Love Me
. 5) Linda Ronstadt - Long, Long Time
. 6) The Coors - Little Wing (a cover of the Jimi Hendrix song)
. 7) Joni Mitchell - Amelia
. 8) Melissa Etheridge - I Will Never Be the Same
. 9) Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
10) Sinead O'Connor - Sacrifice (a cover of the Elton John song)
11) Scars on 45 - Change My Needs (the song you once used for that Cake Eaters music vid)
12) Marianne Faithfull - El Gavilan (The Hawk) - (a cover of the Kris Kristofferson song)
13) Rickie Lee Jones - It Must Be Love
14) Martina McBride - Concrete Angel
15) Kate Bush - This Woman's Work
16) Jennifer Hudson & Tori Kelly - Hallelujah (a cover of the Leonard Cohen song)

Finally, speaking of Crimes of the Future, apparently Kristen has been spending quite a bit of time working in the editing room with director David Cronenberg.
https://www.documentjournal.com/2021/12/kristen-stewart-and-david-cronenberg-examine-the-existentialist-side-of-filmmaking/
This came as quite a surprise to me.
Needless to say, I also liked how David compared working with Kristen to driving a Ferrari.

reply

I'm sure you also noticed I also included the clip from Undertow where you got your nickname Carved Kid from, when Kristen stated, "Can I carve your name in your face."

Needless to say, I also liked how David compared working with Kristen to driving a Ferrari.

And by his analogy, Cronenberg initially thought Kristen was a Volkswagen and was pleasantly surprised to discover that she was a Ferrari all along.

As far as the interview, it delved pretty deep in the ontological sense, when he went on to discuss his existentialist and transhumanist take on the human nature of being as being a complete interpenetration between the inside and outside of ones body, that technology is an extension of the body and that when the body is finished, we're finished. Kristen eloquently chimed in on the topic by adding that technology is an extension of the body whether we use it to kill ourselves or to sustain our lives.

The screenplay I recently completed explores a similar topic, although it differs in the sense that although humans experience everything through our flesh and blood bodies, including consciousness, when the body dies and so does our soul and consciousness, this does not necessarily mean it is the end of us--for if the body is resurrected by a higher power such as God, a human can live again. Of course my story takes place in a world and at a time when billionaire transhumanists rule a technocracy and plan on using everything at their disposal to enhance cognitive ability and extend human life, especially when it comes to its rulers and by doing so, taking God completely out of the equation, leading to humankind's eventual detriment and eternal demise.

reply

Of course I noticed that you included that scene, LL.

Meanwhile, I have reburned the cd I mentioned above with a few different songs.
I have edited the above tracklist, so it is now current.

Finally, from the WTF file, back on December 1st, I preordered the Blu-ray for Spencer from Amazon.
At the time I placed my order, the Blu-ray had a January 11th release date.
Yesterday I received updated shipping info which informed me that I could expect delivery on February 16th.
Oh well, I first thought, a five day delay is not so bad.
Then I quickly realized that it was a delay of five weeks, not five days.
This I found very annoying indeed.
I wonder what the hell is going on.

reply

I cancelled my Amazon Prime membership years ago, Carved, as a form of boycotting them. So for disclaimer purposes, I may not be the best one to explain what is going on with your order.

Regarding the Spencer Blu-ray you ordered, the Amazon product page still mentions:

This title will be released on January 11, 2022. Pre-order now.

Judging by what you mentioned in your comment and reading between the lines, it sure seems that the number of copies of this film that were pre-ordered before you placed your order on December 1st, vastly exceed the number of copies they project to receive and ship out near the January 11th release date, so it would be interesting to know how many copies they have backordered that day.

I'm aware that regarding items that are in stock, Amazon must ship out these items within 30 days of receiving the order from a customer. But as far as pre-orders, I'm quite certain that Amazon will only guarantee that they will fulfill your order and ship it out within 30 days of the release date (e.g., January 11 release date + 30 days = February 10, which gives the postal carrier nearly a week to deliver it to your door. Like I mentioned earlier, it appears that the demand for a Blu-ray copy of this film greatly exceeds the supply in the sense that not enough copies are projected to be made available to Amazon fulfillment centers in Florida within the next several days. So if the long delay is the result of a supply chain issue, hopefully the manufacturer will bump up production so that Amazon will have enough copies to mail out sooner than projected.

reply

Good morning, LL and Happy New Year!

Regarding this delay, right now my plan is as follows ...
1) On January 11th, I shall go to either Best Buy, Target and/or Walmart to see if the Spencer Blu-ray is available. All three stores are within a few miles from where I live, so this will be no problem whatsoever.
2) If it is available, I shall purchase it and cancel my order from Amazon.
3) Sometime in the future, whenever it gets released, I shall purchase the Criterion Collection of Spencer, this assuming that Criterion will eventually add Spencer to their collection of films, something that I fully expect will happen.

I currently own three Criterion Collection Blu-ray releases of films with Kristen.
They are ...
Clouds of Sils Maria
Certain Women
Personal Shopper

Of course, part of me is willing to wait even longer for the regular Blu-ray release of Spencer, this in the hope that the words, "WINNER: ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS (2021)" will need to be printed on the cover. ;-)

reply

I checked Walmart's online site, Carved, and they are also taking pre-orders and selling it at the same price as Amazon. What I found interesting is if you order now, they claim it will arrive by January 19th. So if this is correct, there doesn't appear to be a supply chain issue at all. But I highly doubt Walmart will guarantee a January 19th delivery date when Amazon cannot even come close to meeting that date--so maybe there still isn't enough supply to meet short-term demand. So I sure hope you are able to get a copy at one of the retailers you mentioned on January 11th.

Of course, part of me is willing to wait even longer for the regular Blu-ray release of Spencer, this in the hope that the words, "WINNER: ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS (2021)" will need to be printed on the cover. ;-)

According to Metacritic's BEST OF 2021: FILM AWARDS & NOMINATIONS SCORECARD, metacritic.com/feature/film-awards-and-nominations-scorecard Kristen appears to be blowing away the competition in the Lead Actress category. However, I should add that Kristen did not win an award from the New York Film Critics Circle or Los Angeles Film Critics Association like she did for her performance in Clouds of Sils Maria. But then again, Kristen got snubbed for CoSM, so awards, even from the most prestigious film critics groups in the world, isn't a foolproof precursor for being nominated and winning an Oscar.

So we'll have to wait until March 27th when the 94th Academy Awards ceremony takes place to know for sure. With that I hope you have a great day and year.

reply

Regarding my preorder for the Spencer Blu-ray, I had decided to wait until today (January 12th) to go to one of the retailers I mentioned since I have the day off from work.
However, last night I received an e-mail from Amazon stating that my order had been shipped via USPS from Dallas, Tx. and was scheduled to arrive Thursday, January 13th.
I still have no idea why they had previously said that the scheduled arrival date had been delayed until February 16th, but obviously, such was not the case.
So now I am content to wait a few more days to receive said Blu-ray.

And speaking of waiting, the Screen Actors Guild nominations will be announced next week, so it'll be interesting to see what happens there. Let us not forget that Kristen has already received one SAG nomination in her career, this in the Cast Award category for Into the Wild (2007).

reply

The Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced today Shockingly, Kristen did NOT get nominated!

reply

Yeah, I just read that, Allaby.
That is very surprising and extremely unwelcome news indeed.

reply

Of course winning an Academy Award is worth all the marbles, so I sure hope she at least gets nominated. As far as winning the golden statuette, no one has ever won the Best Actress Oscar without at least receiving a nom from the SAG. So this SAG snub really puts a damper on her prospects of winning, at least from a historical perspective. But then again, for a contender this highly regarded by the top awards experts to get snubbed, as many of them predicted her to win the SAG award, this too may likewise be unprecedented. So we'll just have to wait and see.

reply

Wow, that is disappointing, not even to get a nomination, especially given all the accolades she received for the role.

reply

Even the words of disappointment coming from fans such as you Ron, CKid, Allaby and myself is an understatement in comparison to what Jenelle Riley stated in a Variety article published earlier today entitled: SAG Nominations 2022: 19 Biggest Snubs and Surprises, From Kristen Stewart to Michaela Jaé Rodriguez and ‘Pose’ variety.com/2022/awards/news/kristen-stewart-sag-2022-snubs-surprises-1235152311/

If the name Jenelle Riley sounds familiar, perhaps it's because you watched the Q&A on the SAG channel I posted previously, as she was the moderator. Jenelle is the Deputy Awards and Features Editor at Variety and here are some excerpts from the article:

The SAG Awards are usually good for a few shockers, but there’s rarely one as big as this year’s omission of Kristen Stewart for her heralded performance in “Spencer.” That puzzling absence tops the list of head scratchers...

SNUB: Kristen Stewart, “Spencer”
Not to be hyperbolic, but it’s difficult to remember an omission as shocking as that of Stewart in the history of the SAG Awards. Since “Spencer” premiered at the Venice Film Festival (maybe even before), the actor has been pegged as the frontrunner for her turn as Princess Diana. Not only did her stunning turn silence any doubters, but there was a strong perception that Stewart was overdue for a nomination, having consistently turned in great work for years. Everything seemed to be on track: Stewart was charming on the circuit and racking up nominations and awards on a regular basis. It’s hard to say what happened — maybe enough voters didn’t see the film? Maybe everyone assumed she was safe and wanted to spread the love with their votes? We’ll never know.

reply

Yeah, that Variety article sums up things quite nicely, LL, as does this one from Slash Film ...
https://www.slashfilm.com/732608/the-sag-awards-snubbed-the-best-performance-of-the-year/

I'm only going to quote the first and last paragraphs. I hope you will click on the link and read the entire article.

The SAG Awards Snubbed The Best Performance Of The Year

Every year, there is an awards snub that cuts to the heart of who we are as human beings, and lays bare our deepest impulses to decry the "Academy" and whatever horse the lot of them rode in on. Truly, it happens every year. This year, it just so happened to be the one no one expected: the princess herself, Kristen Stewart.
------------
And therein, folks, lies the story of this season's snub. Though it never fails to happen, we didn't expect it to cut quite so deep this year. May this momentary bump in the road do little to keep K-Stew from her rightful throne: the Oscar.

reply

Ck, I read the rest of the article and the writer goes into other aspects of how strong the performance was and why a nomination was deserved. Very well said by the writer. Kristen has been snubbed before and some of those times other performances may have been strong enough to give some reason, but this time seems too much.

reply

If there's any consolation, Carved, at least it's good to know that the feelings we're experiencing pertaining to Kristen's snub isn't simply the feelings exclusive to a fan of hers. Many awards experts and film critics are stunned as well. Yeah, I understand that judging acting talent can be highly subjective, but even when one looks at the objective data, it still doesn't make any sense whatsoever that Kristen wasn't included among the five SAG nominees.

I would understand the snub if it had to do with the five films of the actresses who were nominated were all critically acclaimed or commercially successful. But from these five films, only House of Gucci can be considered a box office success, while only The Eyes of Tammy Faye can be considered a critical darling as this was the only film that had a Rotten Tomatoes rating over the 60 percentile. So Spencer would have been a much better fit as it has a Certified Fresh RT score of 83%.

And Kristen portrayed the most famous woman of our time and absolutely nailed the part according to the vast majority of film experts, for goodness sake!

reply

Just got back from work and was most happy to find the Spencer Blu-ray waiting in my mailbox.

And speaking of Rotten Tomatoes, I had to laugh when I saw the "Certified Fresh" insignia from Rotten Tomatoes printed on the bottom of the front cover of the Blu-ray package.

Also printed on the front is, "Stewart's Princess Diana Is One For The Ages." - Awards Daily
and on the back you will find, "Spectacular ... Practically As Close To Perfection As Possible." from Discussing Film

Oh yeah, one thing that I'm somewhat surprised about is that the Aspect Ratio is only listed as 1.66:1. Man, that's barely widescreen.

Finally, in other exciting news (he says sarcastically), waiting in my computer mailbox was an e-mail from Amazon informing me that due to a price drop, I have received a three cent refund on my purchase. Yup, that's 3/100 of a dollar. Will wonders never cease?

reply

Congrats on getting the Blu-ray movie! Some great praise on the CD jacket, very nice.

Lol, and congrats on your 3 cent refund. :)

reply

Oh yeah, one thing that I'm somewhat surprised about is that the Aspect Ratio is only listed as 1.66:1. Man, that's barely widescreen.

Funny you mention this Carved as when I was doing all my Spencer movie edits, during the editing phase, the video did not have black vertical bars on the side until I uploaded the video to YouTube which sets its standard aspect ratio at 16:9. I considered cropping the black bars but I'm glad I didn't as this would have negatively impacted the viewing experience as the European widescreen standard is associated with European arthouse films.

In many of the scenes, Pablo Lorrain shot Spencer using KODAK Super 16 mm film which is synonymous with the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. He seems to be a big fan of this analog film format as his other critically acclaimed film Jackie was likewise shot in the 1.66:1 aspect and captured on 16mm film stocks.

I believe this is what contributes to this films haunted feeling especially during the fable scenes while making Kristen appear to be even more hauntingly beautiful than she is during tight closeups. Lorrain and his cinematographer Claire Mathon tried to emulate Stanley Kubrick's camera movement and rhythm of shots in films such as A Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon which were also shot using the 1.66:1 aspect.

As a case in point, a film that looks absolutely gorgeous is Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander. The Criterion Collection Blu-Ray release of this film will take your breath away. I could not put my finger on why this film offered such a unique and visceral visual experience until I learned that it was filmed using the 1.66:1 aspect ratio and was shot on super 16mm film.

Other noteworthy examples include Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, Stanely Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot, Katheryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.

reply

Thanks for the info regarding the use of the 1.66:1 Aspect Ratio, LL.
Of the films you listed in your final paragraph, the only one I currently own is Rear Window on DVD, and the back of the case does indeed state that the Aspect Ratio is "Anamorphic Widescreen 1.66:1."

reply

A couple of days ago I was watching several of Kristen's interviews including this wonderful Q&A on the SAG-AFTRA Foundation YouTube channel: youtube.com/watch?v=A0iI9cLWxNU

The SAG must really think the world of her performance in Spencer, considering the timing of this interview. Not!

reply

I still have no idea why they had previously said that the scheduled arrival date had been delayed until February 16th, but obviously, such was not the case.

That's good to hear Carved. For us Hawaii residents, it oftentimes works the other way around. A seller could tell us to expect an order to arrive in a week when in reality if often takes two or even three weeks before it's delivered.

reply

Not to be hyperbolic, but it’s difficult to remember an omission as shocking as that of Stewart in the history of the SAG Awards.

Indeed. This isn't the first time with one of her roles not getting a nom and those in the industry could call it a snub, but this time is probably the most egregious.

reply

I thought Kristen would win, but they just announced Nicole Kidman won the Globe for best actress.

reply

Yeah I thought Stewart or Chastain had it. Was not expecting Kidman to win.

I didn't understand this movie. Despite it's title, the protagonist doesn't carry a gun, never takes on a case, and Hawk is nowhere in sight. Hell, they even moved the setting from Boston to f-cking England. If nothing else, it wins an award for the most bizarre of the recent spate of reboots we've been bukkaked with of late
