On Battlestar Galactica

I think she's gorgeous, but sometimes her acting clanks something awful.
That one big scene where she throws a clock and bitches about screwing over the Humans because she's unhappy being a freeking Cylon ... it just "clanks" to my ears. Not convincing, sounds like someone hollering the words but not feeling the part. Happens again when she's on Caprica and yells, "Incoming !" I don't know why, but it doesn't feel like a fully invested actor crying out to us. I like her and her character, but the clanks keep on coming. And I don't know how to put my finger on it other than her line reading isn't convincing.

she's a horrible actress ( on that, haven't seen her on anything else )

reply

It's frustrating because she's very pretty and there are a lot of other scenes where she does fine, if not spectacular.
And I don't imagine I could do better. It's just a matter of being convincing, and I keep stumbling across her on BSG.
How does one person howl at the moon and we believe them, and another seems like they just want attention?
It's a puzzle for me.

reply

i dont know either

I think she was the best actor ( with the best story arc ) on the whole show, and that's saying something. I detected no clankiness at all.

lol

Fair enough. I have been struggling with BSG because I haven't had something this immense to think about in quite a while, other than US politics.
The whole thing is fascinating and I want to comment about it, but it's been gone for over a decade.
I may not be in touch with the BSG zeitgeist.

reply

I wasn't in touch with the BSG zeitgeist either. It took seeing a wonderful episode of Portlandia in which they become obsessed with BSG to the point of kidnapping a writer to get me into the show, some years after it aired.

That said, I thought she did wonderfully. She was playing a robot after all. Maybe that's the clankiness?

reply

The funny thing about BSG was that many of the Cylons, particularly Sharon/Athena ( Grace Park ) and Caprica 6 were more emotional and "human" than the humans.

Nice to hear. What I like about the show is has resonance with our current situation but I don't want to kick a hornet's nest over current politics. Yet, it speaks to it !
Just a dumb TV show, but if I were to comment on something that is thought provoking, BSG seems better than most.
I'm treating it as if it's a current topic, but it's not. My loss.
