He's Australian?

I thought he was English.

dame edna was hilarious

reply

Blasphemy!!

He’s a national bloody treasure mate!

reply

Sorry.

reply

Ha! I’m not actually upset at that, and to be fair I believe he has spent much of his working life in the UK.

He’s definitely an Australian legend though, one of the sharpest and wittiest comedians this country has produced.

reply

But the accent?

reply

I've only seen him as Dame Edna and the accent was exaggerated so I couldn't really tell.

reply

It's been decades since I last saw the show, but I think he regularly made references to Australia.

reply

Born in Melbourne in 1934 Barry went to London in 1959 and has been there ever since although he often visits Australia. From a solidly middle class background his posh accent is a mixture of educated Australian and I would guess after all this time some English accent has seeped in as well.

reply

That explains it. I've only ever seen him in British stuff.

reply

Back in those days people of real talent in the arts had to leave Australia ( which then was a small and isolated Anglo outpost ) if they wanted to pursue a career in that field. Barry's talent couldn't be suppressed and it couldn't be ignored but Australia had no idea either of what to do with him or how to cope with him.

Clive James was another Australian who went to London a few years after Barry Humphries. Germaine Greer was another.

Do you guys regret letting Rolf Harris go?

reply

Rolf Harris certainly had his fans although his brand of humour and his routines were never my cup of tea. Not that I disliked him and of course his kiddy fiddling wasn't publicly known back then. I guess you could say Australia got the better part of the deal when Rolf left.

Mind you I do enjoy his cover of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.

I remember seeing him on the BBC as a kid presenting shows about cartoons and painting. I didn't know until a few years ago that he actually wrote and performed that Kangaroo song. I always thought he was kind of a weird grandpa.

Uhm, not sure what to think of that cover.😬

reply

Oh, I see. You thought he was a British comedian playing an Australian character. I was confused in a different way, I used to think his tv shows were Australian.
