Big Bad John

I was just a kid when it came out. I can remember playing it and watching it go 'round and 'round at 45rpm.

The first song I fell in love with was "Flowers on the Wall," by the Statler Brothers. Still at the ripe old age of around six, I had a crush on whoever sang "Ribbon of Darkness," and I believe it was the Gordon Lightfoot edition. I must have that wrong, because while I'd believe my husband had that much poetry in his heart at the age of six, that just doesn't sound like me. I must have been older.

Big Bad John brings back good childhood memories for me as well. I still love that song (and for those who haven't heard it, you don't have to like country music to appreciate it).

Songs with stories in them were quite popular back then. It's honestly the only song by Jimmy Dean that I actually know. He must have had others.

At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man. Big John.
